Biology. Meaning of Life and the Universe.

Updated: Mar 19, 2021

It can be very intimidating trying to figure out what you want to do when you get out of high school. There is a wide variety of subjects and topics to choose from and if you haven’t been thinking about it then it can seem overwhelming. One way to start is to think of your favourite subject and pick a career from there. Science is an umbrella term and covers many topics. There are many different careers that involve science. In this post, I’ll be looking at careers in biology, one of the branches of science. It can be hard to find the perfect one, so here are just a few to give you some inspiration.

It all depends on what your interests are and what you enjoy, as you don’t want to be stuck in a dead-end job that doesn’t make you happy to go to work. For example, there is marine biology. Marine biologists study many components such as how various organisms adapt to different environments, ocean currents, the various depths of the ocean, and more. Another branch of this would be an ichthyologist, in similar terms, it is a fisheries biologist. They look at different species of fish to study their history, growth patterns, environment and behaviour. These are some of the incredible careers in biology.

Another one is, a physician, if you enjoy the anatomy sciences then a physician is the job for you. This job ranges from working in the emergency room to working in a family doctor’s office. There is a wide variety of paths you could follow in this type of biology. You could be a pediatrician, a children’s doctor, surgeon, or pathologist, which is someone who studies diseases. There are many more than just the few I’ve listed, but this gives an idea of what being a physician could look like for you.

There is also the career path I am looking to go towards, which is an environmental scientist. What an environmental scientist does is work to reduce human impact on the environment, they use their knowledge of the environment to conduct research and find hazards in our ecosystems. This could be pollutants on land, or in the air or water. With their research, they find ways and make plans to eliminate the issue and protect our environment. The study of biology could also lead to forest biology, a forest biologist looks at how forestry impacts the environment and the biodiversity in that specific ecosystem.

These are only a small amount of careers available if you chose to follow the path of biology science. There are still a huge number of different careers in biology that I haven’t mentioned, but I stuck to the ones that I enjoy and have thought about pursuing at least once in my life. The purpose of this post is to give you an idea of what jobs are possible to follow in biology, and I hope that it helps point you in the right direction when selecting your potential career in biology.
