What to Think About When Applying for University?

Updated: Apr 4, 2021

There are a vast amount of things that you need to think about when applying for university. It’s not just the program that you need to look at when considering where to go. What other extracurricular programs do they have? How far away from home is it? What are your grades like? Have you participated in any volunteering throughout high school? There are plenty more where that came from, and it can be very daunting to think about. If you start to give it some thought beforehand it can make the task less stressful.

One of the most important things to look at when applying is what you want to do for a career. This can help you select a university that will be the best to cater your needs in that field. For example, if you want to pursue a career in marine biology you would not want to apply for the University of Alberta because Alberta is landlocked. Selecting the right university is the most important part when applying to a university as it will play a major role in your future career.

Next, you want to look at where the campus is. This is an important component because it will affect your money and your budgeting. It is good to think about this before it is too late. If you choose to leave home then you should maybe plan on getting a job sooner rather than later. Just living in residence could cost up to eleven-thousand dollars a year. Along with this, you need to think about your budgeting and how much it could cost in total. This plays an important factor if you choose to move out of province or live in residence.

The final point that is really important to think about is participating in opportunities outside of school. Volunteering is a really great option because universities don’t only look at your academics, they also look at the clubs and extracurricular programs that you participated in. It can really help your chances to get into your top choice university if you volunteered during your time in high school or if you participated in a club like robotics or debate club. Volunteering and extracurriculars play a large role in university admissions.

There is a lot to think about when you are applying for university and it is more than just getting through high school with passing grades. It is important to have good budgeting skills and know-how to deal with your money. You also have to think about which universities or colleges would be best for the career you want to pursue and if they have the right programs that you want to take. Finally, you have to think about more than just your academics, remembering to volunteer or take part in extracurricular activities. There is a lot of thought to go into choosing the right university for you.
